Local politicians, Cllr Nick Thulbourn (Labour, Fletton and Woodston) and Labour parliamentary candidate Andrew Pakes, met with concerned residents last week to discuss the impact of the bus cuts. Business owners told them that their staff may struggle to get to work without the hourly bus service.
Stagecoach East, the company responsible for operating the service, says that the route is “not sustainable” and that it was “not an easy decision to make”. The company will redeploy 36 buses onto the 37 bus route which travels between Spalding and Peterborough through Eye, but this service will not go on to March.
Stagecoach East says that only around two people were travelling between Eye and March per trip on average, and that a “group of service changes” will come into effect at the end of next month which will also include network enhancements.
Residents in Thorney can use the Excel A and B services, operated by First Bus, which run every 30 minutes to Peterborough City centre. However, this is not a direct link between Eye and March, and many local residents are concerned about the disruption this will cause.
The withdrawal of the 36 bus service is a major blow for local residents and businesses in Thorney and Peterborough. It is essential that Stagecoach East works with local politicians and residents to ensure that alternative transport links are put in place to minimise the disruption caused by the withdrawal of the service.
