An Astley Bridge resident has called for action to be taken to cut back trees which have overgrown after his 15-year-old daughter was involved in an accident. Wayne Kay, 54, has shared his concerns over the large trees on Crompton Way at the top of Almond Street, stating they are so overgrown that a ‘serious accident is waiting to happen’. This comes after his daughter was ran over a couple of a weeks ago on this road and he is also worried as he sees younger children and the elderly cross the road at the same spot.

Wayne said you have to step at least four yards into the road to see if any oncoming traffic is approaching and he wants safety measures to be implemented. He said: “The trees on Crompton Way from top of Almond Street to the traffic lights at the junction to Moss Bank Way are a complete serious accident waiting to happen. It’s absolutely impossible to cross this road without standing four yards onto Crompton Way, both sides.”

The trees on Crompton Way have grown to the point that pedestrians have to step into the road to see any oncoming traffic, making it a dangerous area for pedestrians. Wayne worries that if the trees are not cut back, a serious accident will occur. He has seen first-hand the consequences of the overgrown trees when his daughter was ran over a couple of weeks ago.

Wayne is also concerned for the safety of the other pedestrians who cross the road, including younger children and the elderly. He said: “You have got to step at least four yards into the road to see the oncoming traffic, so I think something needs to be done before there is a serious accident there. A lot of people cross there, a lot of school kids and older people, so the trees need cutting back and the speed needs reducing.”

Bolton Council has responded to Wayne's concerns and has stated that someone will be going to the location sometime this week to cut back the trees. They have also advised about a crossing point to improve visibility in both directions. A spokesperson for Bolton Council said: “Road safety is a priority for the council and work to clear the growth at the base of the trees, and therefore improve visibility in this area, is expected to be completed this week. There is a crossing point close to the junction of Stambourne Drive and use of which should provide pedestrians with better visibility in both directions.”

It is clear that action needs to be taken to cut back the trees on Crompton Way to ensure the safety of pedestrians. Wayne's daughter's accident has highlighted the dangers of the overgrown trees, and it is important that the council takes action to prevent any further accidents from occurring.
