Steyning Celebrates King's Coronation with Regal Festivities
Key Highlights :
Yesterday, the town of Steyning, nestled in the South Downs, pulled out all the stops to celebrate the King's coronation in style. Hundreds of people took to the streets of the quaint town, just five miles north of Shoreham, to take part in the regal festivities.
The High Street was taken over by Union Flag toting revellers, who were treated to a range of antiques, classic cars, and classy attire. Russell Barnes, the chairman of the visitor and tourism committee in Steyning, organised the event and wanted to create something "a bit different" to celebrate the coronation.
The event was a throwback to the past, with the High Street and main car park pedestrianised for the day. Numerous stalls and attractions were set up, including a miniature railway, which marked the first railway line in the town since 1966.
Speaking about the event, Russell said: "We wanted to put something on for the coronation and decided to deviate from the typical street party. It was a great success and everyone had such a great day. We've encouraged so many people to come to the town and enjoy the independent businesses we have to offer."
Russell's role in the town is entirely voluntary, on top of his day-job as an architect. He said none of today's event would have been possible if not for a dedicated team running the day's proceedings.
The coronation celebrations in Steyning were a unique and memorable event, that provided a fitting tribute to the new King. The town's commitment to creating something special for the occasion was clear, and it's sure to be a day that won't be forgotten in a hurry.
