The Confederation of African Football (CAF) recently issued a statement announcing that Tunisian club Esperance must host their next two matches in the CAF Champions League semi-finals behind closed doors and have also been fined $300,000 (about R5,5 million). This comes after crowd trouble in the previous round, where some spectators attempted to invade the pitch at half-time during a quarter-final second leg against Algerian club JS Kabylie.

Esperance, the four-time winners of the Champions League — the premier African club competition — have expressed their shock and disappointment at the sanctions, believing them to be “too severe”. The club has since announced their intention to appeal the sanctions.

The incident occurred when some of the spectators attempted to enter the field of play at half-time in Rades near Tunis. While police were able to prevent an invasion of the pitch, some were injured by various objects hurled at them. Tear gas was also fired into a section of the crowd in order to restore order. The second half of the match eventually kicked off 45 minutes behind schedule.

The return match ended in a 1-1 draw, with Esperance leading 1-0 on aggregate in the north African showdown. This result means that the Tunisian club will now host Egyptian outfit Al Ahly in the CAF Champions League semi-finals on May 12, albeit behind closed doors.

CAF have warned that any further crowd trouble could result in more severe sanctions being imposed on the club. They have also urged the Tunisian authorities to take the necessary steps to ensure that crowd control is in place for the semi-final match.

Esperance's appeal of the sanctions is still pending, but the club must take all necessary precautions to ensure that their fans behave in a responsible manner and that their matches are held in a safe environment. This is essential if they are to continue to compete in the CAF Champions League and also to ensure that their players and supporters are not put at risk.
