Anna Barlow, a 29-year-old Kiwi mum of two, has earned a life-changing $10,000 scholarship for female entrepreneurs. After losing her own mum at the age of 12, Anna was inspired to start her own business and is now the proud owner of Mom Store, an online retail store.

Anna's mum was a local district councillor and owned a costume hire business and did furniture upholstering from home. Anna was like her shadow, accompanying her to council meetings and observing her work. She fondly remembers her mother's example and is determined to be the same for her own children.

Anna previously worked as a registered nurse at a local GP clinic in Thames, where she lives with her husband Richard and their two children, Hugo and Lucia. After going on maternity leave, Anna started her own online retail business, Mom Store, in 2021.

Two years later, Anna was the winner of the Dermalogica & Saben EmpowHER scholarship, which aims to support female business owners to develop their product or brand through funding and mentoring. Anna was beyond excited to receive the scholarship and is looking forward to all the opportunities it will bring.

When she had her son, Anna was thinking about going back to work when he was about six months old. She didn't want to go back to her old job, so she decided to start her own business. She noticed that there wasn't one place that had all the products she wanted, so she pulled money from her savings and started buying products.

Anna is now a working mum and understands the demands that come with it. She believes that the mum is still the default parent a lot of the time and that it can be hard to balance work and family. She admits she doesn't always get the balance right, but she makes do and puts her work on the back burner when needed.

Anna is lucky to have a supportive family around her, particularly her husband who splits his time between his own business and hers. With the help of the EmpowHER scholarship, Anna and her husband are working on their own line of products. They are currently in the sampling phase and looking to get into manufacturing and distributing.

Anna Barlow's drive and determination has earned her a life-changing scholarship. With the help of the EmpowHER scholarship, Anna and her husband are now able to pursue their dreams of starting their own product line. Anna's story is an inspiring example of how hard work and dedication can pay off in the end.
