Adam Webster, Brighton’s defender, has made it clear how delighted he is with the recent wins. He said, “Every team we play against always praise us on the pitch if there is a stoppage in the game or whatever. Martial was saying to me how well we were playing. Sterling and Gallagher at Chelsea did it a couple of weeks back. I think we were 1-0 down or 1-1 at the time and he (Sterling) was saying we should have been 5-1 up. When it comes from players like that it shows the work we are doing. The way the manager has got us playing is amazing.”
Even though the team was able to celebrate their momentous win over United, they had to quickly turn their focus to the next match. Webster said, “It was huge to get back-to-back wins. We haven’t done that for a while in the league. When you do that, it is so important. You can really kick on. To be honest, our focus is already on Monday. As much as that was an amazing win and we want to enjoy it, we can’t really because we have got another game on Monday. It is all about recovering and going again.”
Albion will be expected to beat an Everton side who are in the relegation zone. But football followers of a certain vintage will be aware the Toffees, whatever their situation, never go down – and always find a way of digging themselves out of trouble. Albion will be on guard but confident in their own abilities all the same.
When asked whether they can target the top four after beating United, Webster said, “It is quite far away but we have got to play some of the big boys up there. If we won all six then who knows but for us we are fully focussed on Monday already. They are fighting for their lives and it won’t be an easy game at all.”
Albion passed a major test against United, playing with intensity and showing off their sharp and incisive passing. Webster puts that down to working on their methods every day in training with that same word – intensity. He said of Roberto De Zerbi: “I think he has got everything. Tactically he is so aware and so good in how he gets us playing. He has got that charisma about him. You definitely know when he comes into the room and it’s so important as a player. And he has got that relationship with the players. It’s not all serious. You can have a laugh and a joke with him. He works relentlessly and want the best for us. Normally a new manager means the old manager hasn’t done very well. But we were in a good place when he came in. At the start we didn’t change too much, it was a work in progress. Over time we have got to where we are now. That is down to a lot of hours on the training pitch and a lot of work. Everyone buying into it and you see some of the young boys playing tonight. Moises (Caicedo) playing out of position. Everyone buys into it, everyone is doing it for the team.”
