Protecting User Eyesight with iOS 17: Apple Introduces Screen Distance Feature

As technology continues to evolve, so do the potential risks associated with using it. For years, Apple has been aware of the potential harm that prolonged exposure to screens can cause and has implemented various tools like Night Shift, True Tone, and Dark Mode to protect users’ eyes. With the upcoming iOS 17 update, Apple is taking their commitment to eye safety a step further by introducing a new feature called Screen Distance.
Screen Distance works by alerting users when they hold their iPhone or iPad Pro too close to their eyes for an extended period. The recommended distance between the device and the eyes is 40-45cm (16-18 inches). If the distance drops below 30cm (12 inches), an “iPhone is Too Close” warning will be triggered. Moving the device back to a safe distance will display a checkmark on the screen, allowing users to proceed as usual. Accompanying the Screen Distance warning, users will see a message saying, “Keeping your phone at arm’s length can protect your eyesight.”
Screen Distance utilizes the TrueDepth camera, which powers Face ID, to measure the distance between the screen and the eyes. To activate Screen Distance, users can go to Settings, navigate to the Screen Time tab, and toggle the Screen Distance slider to the ‘on’ position. This feature will be available on all iPhone and iPad Pro models with Face ID.
The introduction of Screen Distance is a welcomed addition to the iOS 17 update. It is especially beneficial for children who regularly use Apple devices and may be at risk of developing short-sightedness. It is important to note, however, that Screen Distance is not a substitute for regular eye exams. Parents should still ensure that their children are getting regular eye check-ups to ensure their eyes are healthy.
Additionally, iOS 17 is expected to include a slew of other features. These include enhancements related to iMessage, the StandBy feature, and Live Voicemail. All of these features will make their way into the final build of iOS 17, set to be released later this year.
Apple’s commitment to protecting users’ eyesight is commendable. The introduction of Screen Distance in iOS 17 is just one of the many ways that Apple is making sure users are safe when using their devices.
