India’s Ranking Improves To 56th Position In Global Mobile Speed For May: Ookla Index

     India has made a steady improvement in its global median mobile speeds, jumping three spots from 59th to 56th in May, according to the Ookla Speedtest Global Index. The median mobile download speeds in India increased to 39.94 Mbps in May, from 36.78 Mbps in April.

     The Speedtest Global Index ranks mobile and fixed broadband speeds from across the world, monthly. India also saw a slight increase in its median fixed broadband download speeds, from 51.12 Mbps in April to 52.53 Mbps in May.

     UAE topped the chart for overall global median mobile speeds in May, while Mauritius climbed 11 spots in rank globally. Singapore maintained its number one spot for fixed broadband download speeds, while Bahrain increased 17 spots in rank globally.

     Data for the Global Index comes from the hundreds of millions of tests taken by real people using Speedtest every month to test their Internet performance. The index is based on the analysis of millions of recent test results collected from within a given country or region.

     The improvements in India’s mobile speeds are a result of the government’s Digital India initiative, which has seen an increase in the number of mobile phone towers and the expansion of 4G and 5G services. The government has also been pushing for greater access to the internet, with the goal of connecting all of India’s citizens to the digital world.

     The improvement in India’s ranking is a positive sign for the country’s digital infrastructure and a testament to the government’s efforts to provide better access to the internet.
