Adele Roberts Leaves BBC Radio 1 After Eight Years Amid Bowel Cancer Diagnosis
Key Highlights :
Well-known radio presenter Adele Roberts is leaving BBC Radio 1 after eight years of broadcasting with the station. The news was announced by the BBC on May 2023, with Adele set to be replaced by Sam McGregor and Danni Diston. The pair will take over the role of hosting the Weekend Breakfast Show, which will now be broadcast live from BBC Cymru Wales in Cardiff.
Adele Roberts had been hosting the show since 2020, but decided to pursue other projects after being diagnosed with stage two bowel cancer in 2021. Despite leaving her role at Radio 1, Adele will remain part of the BBC family and has already recorded her final episode which aired in May this year.
Aled Haydn Jones, Head of Radio 1, spoke of Adele's departure and said: “Adele is thoroughly loved by the Radio 1 family and audience. She always puts others first; whether it's key workers during the pandemic on her show, other people's health during her own diagnosis of cancer, or supporting her fellow colleagues at the station. Adele ended her run of shows at Radio 1 while continuing to do all of this. She continually goes above and beyond for others and I want to say a huge thank you to her for everything she has done over the last eight years for the station.”
Sam and Danni, who will be taking over the Weekend Breakfast Show, said: “We are SO excited to officially be joining the Radio 1 family. Having our own show is something we've both dreamed of since we can remember. Weekend Breakfast is always a great laugh, the listeners are brilliant and we can't wait to get started. It means so much to us that we will be broadcasting live from BBC Cymru Wales in Cardiff. It's the city where we became best mates, began presenting together and now, the city we proudly call home. Bringing the first daytime Radio 1 show to Wales is going to be so much fun, LETS DO THIS.”
Adele Roberts' departure from BBC Radio 1 is a sad one, but it is clear that she will remain part of the BBC family. Her eight years of broadcasting with the station have been a great success, and the new hosts of the Weekend Breakfast Show are sure to be just as popular. We wish Adele all the best in her future endeavours and thank her for her hard work and dedication to BBC Radio 1.
