Abby Smith is an extraordinary woman. After more than a decade working in the NHS, the 30-year-old mum-of-four from Middlesbrough has just opened her own sandwich shop, Ted’s Tasty Treats, in the town’s historic Dundas Market.

Abby has always had a passion for food. As a young adult, she worked in a food takeaway making sandwiches, and the experience left a lasting impression. But it seemed like a distant dream when she had young children to care for.

Fast forward to 2021, and Abby has made her dream a reality. She now gets up around 5.30am, makes breakfast for her kids, takes them to school and then comes to her shop. It’s a hectic schedule, but Abby loves it.

At Ted’s Tasty Treats, Abby sells hot and cold sandwiches, paninis, jacket potatoes, salads and homemade cakes and bakes. Everything is made from scratch, including the curries, beef dishes and decorated cakes.

Abby’s journey from NHS worker to business owner happened quickly. She saw a unit for rent and decided to take the plunge. “If I don’t go for it now I never will,” she said.

The business is named after Abby’s youngest son, Teddy. She hopes that her former NHS patients will become her new customers. “I’m so excited to be opening my shop and I’m looking forward to meeting all the lovely people of Middlesbrough,” she said.

Abby worked through the COVID-19 pandemic, providing health care for patients in the community and at The James Cook University Hospital. “You just had to get on with things,” she said.

Abby’s story is an inspiring one. It shows that with determination and hard work, anything is possible. We wish her all the best with her new business venture!
