Wake Up with Savoury Oatmeal: A Recipe for a Deliciously Unexpected Breakfast
Key Highlights :

Oatmeal is a breakfast staple, but it can quickly become a bore. The typical partners for breakfast oats – blueberries, bananas, brown sugar or other subtle sweets – are fine, but lead to oat-exhaustion almost immediately. If you’re looking for something savoury to rattle your shoulders and wake you up in the morning, then you need to try this recipe for savoury oatmeal.
The idea that oatmeal has to be sweet is utter poppycock. You can give your oats a savoury push by adding an egg (or just the egg yolk) to the mix, and giving it the risotto treatment. Or, take a page from The Kitchn’s James Park and try a cheesy, savoury oatmeal with kimchi.
But don’t stop there. Oatmeal doesn’t have to be the bulk of the dish. Instead, rebalance the scales to for a ratio that’s closer to 50/50. Fry up crumbled sausage with sambal, bring out the kimchi, steam an egg, chop coriander, scallions and fresh ginger, and take out your container of fried garlic. Boil your rolled oats with a cube of chicken bullion, and assemble a glorious meal you can look forward to.
To build a bowl of oatmeal that’ll wake you up, grab ingredients you would put on a breakfast sandwich, or on top of a pizza. These aren’t garnishes; they’re centre-stage ingredients. Think cheese, bacon, pepperoni, roasted tomatoes, olives, pickles, and hot sauce. Decide if you want to drop everything into the pot of oats and mix it in, so the cheese melts and all of the flavours mingle, or if you want to add each component in its own little area and build different combinations in every spoonful.
This savoury oatmeal recipe will obliterate all oat-norms. The half-cup of oatmeal takes on a supporting role, propping up every spoonful of egg, sausage, and garlic, and providing a little relief from the growing heat of the sambal. The result is a bowl of oatmeal that is flavorful and salty, and absolutely delicious.
Give this savoury oatmeal recipe a try and you’ll never look at oats the same way again. Make this recipe and wake up to a delicious and unexpected breakfast.
