The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is full of enemies for Link to battle, from the classic Moblins and Lynels to new Zonai robots and Gleeoks. But one of the most iconic monsters in the series has returned, and it’s more horrifying than ever. Say hello to the Like Likes, the bane of Link’s existence in Hyrule.

Like Likes have been a part of the Zelda series since the very first game. They’re usually depicted as featureless tubes with a large mouth and a row of teeth. These creepy creatures can devour Link and eat his equipment, making them one of the most feared monsters in the land.

In The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, the Like Likes have been redesigned to be even more grotesque than before. They cling to walls and stare menacingly at Link with their circular row of teeth. When they open their mouth, a gross eyeball is revealed in the center, which is their weak point. Not only can they still swallow Link whole and steal his gear, but there are also several varieties of Like Likes that have different elemental powers. Electric ones shoot shocking charges at Link, while stone Like Likes launch boulders at him.

These redesigned Like Likes are absolutely horrifying, but they’re also a great example of how The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom pays tribute to the series’ rich history of monsters while still pushing it forward. The new design feels like a fully realized version of a creature that old Nintendo tech couldn’t capture at the time, turning a vague tube into a fleshy parasite.

If you’re brave enough to face the Like Likes, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is available now on Nintendo Switch. Prepare yourself for the absolutely horrifying return of these classic enemies.
