Key Highlights :
Teboho Mokoena has finally broken his silence on his incredible achievement of winning the 2022/23 PSL Player of the Season as well as the Midfielder of the Season award. Much debate has surrounded Mokoena’s win at Sunday’s PSL awards, with many citing the performances of other players as being more deserving. However, it was the DStv Premiership coaches who had the final say.
The 25-year-old midfielder enjoyed an incredible season for the irrepressible Brazilians and has now weighed in on his achievements, attributing it to doing the ‘dirty’ work for the team, while heaping praise on the club’s head coach, Rulani Mokwena.
“I will always do the dirty work for the team, score, and assist when needed, but I know there are players that will do that. My job is to protect the team and defend because I know that the players in front of me will score. My target for this season was to play regularly and perform well”, he told the club’s official website.
“Coach Rulani has reminded me throughout the season that my job is to protect the defence so that we concede fewer goals as a team. I did a lot of work with the Coach. I started being interested in Rodri Hernandez and watching Manchester City as well as how he moves and defends”, he continued.
Mokoena has been called up to coach Hugo Broos’ 34-member preliminary squad for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Morocco on 17 June. He is undoubtedly one of the most talented midfielders in the PSL and this award is a testament to his hard work and dedication.
The Brazilians have enjoyed a remarkable season, finishing second in the DStv Premiership, and Mokoena’s award is a fitting reward for his consistent performances. His tireless work rate and ability to dictate the tempo of the game have been instrumental in the team’s success.
Mokoena has been a key figure in the Brazilians’ midfield for several years, and it is no surprise that he has been rewarded with this prestigious award. His performances have been exemplary and have been a major factor in the team’s success this season.
Teboho Mokoena’s commitment to the team and his willingness to do the ‘dirty work’ for the team have been recognised by the PSL coaches, and he is a worthy winner of the 2022/23 PSL Player of the Season and Midfielder of the Season awards.
