Farmer Matt has left fans of the hit Channel 7 reality show Farmer Wants a Wife shocked after dropping a bombshell on Tuesday night’s episode. With only two ladies left on his farm - Annabelle and Olivia - the 23-year-old sheep and cattle farmer from Bookham, NSW, had some surprise news to share.

Gathering Annabelle and Olivia in the kitchen, a nervous-looking Matt revealed a decision he had made that could affect whether the ladies stayed around or decided to leave. “I do have something to tell you ladies that’s cropped up fairly recently, but it’s an important discussion,” he began. “I’ve had a fairly serious chat with Dad and he’s given me the advice that if I do want to see myself having a future in farming, and continuing that legacy on the farm, it’s really important that I chase after some external work off-farm and work externally in agriculture.”

Matt said having a fallback was “really important”, and he had recently “been looking at jobs within the Department of Agriculture in Canberra”. “I will be leaving the farm and moving to Canberra, with the idea of eventually coming back onto the farm and taking over one day. “Canberra is a fairly good move because I am still so close to home, so we’ll still have a lot of time back on the farm.”

Annabelle and Olivia, both based in NSW, looked quite surprised at the news, but each reacted slightly differently. “It is a little bit of a shock because at the end of the day it is going to affect Olivia’s or my future,” Annabelle said in a separate interview. But in speaking to Matt, she said Canberra was only an hour away from the farm, so she would be prepared to make the move. As a hospitality worker, she added that she knew she would be able to find hotel work in Canberra.

Olivia seemed a bit more tentative. And Matt noticed, saying Annabelle’s reaction was “upbeat and positive”, while Olivia had gone quiet. “I feel really worried; does this change our relationship at all?” Matt wondered in a separate to-camera interview. “I guess it is a change of plan, and the fact that Olivia is that bit quieter does worry me.”

Later, Matt approached Olivia to see how she was feeling about the news. “It wasn’t exactly what I was expecting,” she said. “I guess because, coming here, there was a bit of an idea in my head of what the future would look like. “I do feel a lot of peace at the farm, and I feel like the main source of my peace and happiness is you - so I feel like I could kind of go anywhere and still be really happy.”

While that romantic sentiment brought a smile to Matt’s face, Farmer fans went wild on social media, noting that he had just thrown both ladies a massive curveball. Some viewers questioned Matt’s decision to send Chelsea home last week because she wasn’t committed to the farm, and then turn around and tell the two remaining ladies that he was moving to Canberra. Others argued that it was not uncommon for farmers to move off the farm for a period of time for further education or additional income.

The news certainly created a divide among fans, with some saying that Matt was too young to settle down and should play the field before making a commitment, while others said that if he found true love, it didn’t matter where they lived as long as they were both happy.

It remains to be seen how the news will affect the final two ladies and their relationships with Matt, but one thing is for sure - Farmer Matt has certainly left fans divided with his shocking announcement.
