The small town of Peterhead in Scotland recently hosted a special Coronation Community Soup and Sweet lunch to celebrate the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. The event was held at Buchanhaven, a popular spot in the town, and was a great success. Everyone was invited to enjoy a selection of homemade soups and puddings, a cuppa and a chat, as well as a range of activities to mark the occasion.

The lunch saw locals enjoying a variety of soups, including sweet tattie, leek and cheese, chicken broth, tomato and carrot and corriander, as well as a range of delicious sweets, such as trifle, Eton mess, apple crumble and custard, cheesecake and jelly and ice cream. To add to the festivities, there were also prizes on offer for the best decorated crown and the best dressed royal, as well as a photo opportunity with King Charles and a trivia quiz to win Coronation memorabilia.

The event was organised by Morag Fraser Finnie, who was delighted with the turnout: “There as a fantastic turnout. I think we had more than 80 people in total. Everything was free but folk still gave us a donation. It was a wonderful morning.”

The Coronation Community Soup and Sweet lunch was just one of the events organised by Morag and her team. Every week, the team host ‘Cuppie n a Claik’ at Buchanhaven, which is open to everyone who enjoys a get-together and a chat. The idea came about last year when Morag’s husband Ron broke his leg and the only place they could go was down to Buchanhaven pier. Morag said: “A few of us met up and I took my flask and offered folk a cuppie. When I retired in April after 30-plus years at Anna Ritchie School, Helen and I thought we would start ‘Cuppie and a Claik’. We thought maybe once or twice a month, but we are now into week 15. We have our regulars and more new faces are joining, so why not come along and join in the fun at the Boatshed on High Street.”

So, if you’re in the Peterhead area and looking for a fun, social event, why not join the friendly folk at Buchanhaven for a cuppie and a chat? With plenty of Coronation fun, delicious homemade soups and puddings, a trivia quiz and a photo opportunity with King Charles, there’s something for everyone!
