Apple is set to launch its first online store in Vietnam next week, the company announced on Friday, in a bid to cash in on the country's young and tech-savvy population. This move marks the Silicon Valley giant's first foray into the Southeast Asian nation, where it has been selling its products through authorised resellers.

Vietnam is home to a population of 100 million people and the country's communist government has set a goal to have 85 percent of its adult population with access to a smartphone by 2025, an increase from the current 73 percent. According to the market research platform Statista, less than a third of the country's mobile users have an iPhone.

The new online store will give customers in Vietnam the opportunity to discover products and connect with Apple's experienced experts. The production of accessories and assembly of mobile phones account for up to 70 percent of electronics manufacturing in Vietnam, with the majority of products being exported. Vietnam's mobile phone production industry reported an import-export turnover of US$114 billion last year, which is a third of the country's total import-export revenue.

Apple's move into Vietnam is part of a larger trend of global tech giants such as Intel, Samsung, and LG, setting up assembly operations in the country. The launch of the online store next week is sure to be welcomed by the tech-savvy population of Vietnam, as it will give them access to Apple's products and services.
